No sir, I didn't like it. Didn't like it one bit.
I'm talking about the series finale of the WB's Charmed , which ended its eighth and final season on Sunday night. What should have been a great sendoff by producers and writers for the Halliwell sisters Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Paige (Rose McGowan) was flat, disappointing, and focused more on the secondary players than The Charmed Ones.
However, that's not the reason why I disliked the episode. The thing that ticked me off was the magical device that Piper, the oldest sister, used in order to save Phoebe and Paige form a horrible death that they encountered last episode. A device that, in my opinion, is the lazy way out of resolving issues.
I'm talking about . . . .wait for it . . . time travel. Aarrrgh!
When writers need to correct tragic situation in science fiction or fantasy they love to rely on time travel to make everything right. Now, you're probably gritting your teeth and saying 'Rich, you arrogant bastard! I bet you would go back in time to save a loved one.' My answer to that would be 'no' because 1) I don't know anyone who has the ability to time travel, and 2) I would royally screw up the timeline. Anyone who has watched The Butterfly Effect knows that even one insignificant change in a timeline can alter the future for eternity. So, rather than have some other magical way of restoring life to Phoebe and Paige, or have a Whitelighter like Leo (Brian Krause) come down and save the sisters, the writers resorted to this simple age-old solution.
It was lamer than Barbaro during the running of The Preakness and it made the Halliwell sisters go out in a whimper rather than the blaze of glory they deserved after defeating so many powerful demons throughout the series run. Add to that the fact that this was a Piper-driven episode with Phoebe and Paige in the background. The extended Halliwell family members got more screen time than either Milano or McGowan. Being a series finale it should have focused only on The Charmed Ones. Instead we got brief glimpses of them during battle and as they shared their memories of what happened to their lives in the future.
I always enjoyed Charmed when I watched it in the past and I was looking for a more powerful ending to the series. I'm very sorry that there wasn't one to be had.
